  • Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History, 09/24

Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History, a Book Talk with Rhonda Garelick

    Friday 24th September 2021 — 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Coco Chanel transformed forever the way women dressed. Her influence remains so pervasive that to this day we can see her afterimage a dozen times while just walking down a single street: in all the little black dresses, flat shoes, costume jewelry, cardigan sweaters, and tortoiseshell eyeglasses on women of every age and background. A bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume is sold every three seconds. Arguably, no other individual has had a deeper impact on the visual aesthetic of the world.

But how did a poor orphan become a global icon of both luxury and everyday style? How did she develop such vast, undying influence? And what does our ongoing love of all things Chanel tell us about ourselves?

Rhonda Garelick will explore Chanel’s unique genius in our virtual conversation on Friday, September 24. After the conversation, you will be able to ask your questions directly to the author!

This event will be in English. Order your copy here.

  • Virtual Quebec Film Festival, Oct 1-29

Virtual Quebec Film Festival: Four films, Four weeks

    October 1-29, 2021

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Department of French and Francophone Studies of Georgetown College, Film and Media Studies at Georgetown University, and the Québec Government Office to bring you the first ever Virtual Quebec Film Festival: Four films, Four weeks. "Il y en a pour tous les goûts !" There is something for every taste! A historical film, a drama, a comedy and a horror movie — discover different faces of the contemporary Canadian cinema with the acclaimed quebecois directors François Girard, Myriam Verreault, Monia Chokri, and Robin Aubert.

Throughout October, join us online to discover a new film each week. You will also have an opportunity to meet the director of the horror film Les Affamés Robin Aubert at a virtual round table discussion which will conclude the Festival on October 29.

All screenings are free, and will be accompanied with English subtitles. Please register in advance as the number of tickets for each film is limited. All participants will receive access to Eventive to watch the films. Les Affamés is available on Netflix, but you are also welcome to join us on October 28 for an in-person Netflix Watch Party! Just in time for getting you in the Halloween mood (get creative with that mask!), and it's not as scary as to watch a Zombie movie all alone at home, isn't it?!
