With warmth, wit, and remarkable honesty, author Steve Hoffman reflects on identity, home, and the transformative power of embracing another culture in his memoir, A Season for That. Moving his family from Minnesota to the quaint village of Autignac in southern France, Hoffman's story is both deeply personal and universally relatable, offering a fresh perspective on what it means to find connection in an unfamiliar place. Following the conversation, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the author, as well as purchase copies of the book onsite.

About the Book

Part travel memoir, part culinary adventure, and part love letter to rural France, A Season for That follows Hoffman and his family as they leave Minnesota for the small village of Autignac in southern France, hoping to immerse themselves in French life. What begins as a dream of becoming "more French" quickly gives way to the realities of village life, language, family, and belonging. Through local food, winemaking, and the generosity of his neighbors, Hoffman discovers that the true heart of France lies not in romantic ideals, but in its landscapes, traditions, and everyday rituals.

About the Author

Steve Hoffman is a food writer and tax preparer based in Minnesota whose work has earned multiple national honors, including the 2019 James Beard M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. In 2025, he received a second James Beard Award nomination for his essay "A Fat Affair," published in Food & Wine. A Season for That was named one of the best food and wine books of 2024 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, and Saveur, and has been widely praised for its lyrical prose, humor, and heartfelt portrayal of life in southern France.
