Romain Gary was born in 1914 in Russia. His mother was a poor Jewish woman who had always wanted to be an actress. He never knew his father but claimed that he may have been a famous Russian actor. Gary and his mother moved to France and he went on to become a Titan of French Literature, publishing more than 50 books (under different names). This man of many talents fought for France during World War 2, on the side of the Free French Forces and became a diplomat serving France as Consul General in Los Angeles. He was married to actress Jean Seberg. He took his life in 1980.
The discussion panel will include the Consul General of France, Olivier Serot-Almeras; the Delegate General of the Fondation Alliance Francaise Paris in the US, Jean-François Hans and the Alliance Française de Washington DC’s Executive Director, Sarah Pickup-Diligenti. The panelists will talk about Romain Gary as diplomat, as man in History and as man of letters.
